What is Sports Psychology?

We are all creatures of the mind. Even the most physically toned and athletically-accomplished sportsman can only win if their mental preparation is adequate.

Key techniques of the sports psychologist include visualisation, hypnosis, confidence work, aggression channelling and target-setting.

The following website is acknowledged as a leader in helping athletes to achieve control over their body language, on and off the sports pitch :

Visualisation

Visualisation is a technique for rehearsing key skills in the mind, in order to develop the neural pathways involved in the successful completion of these skills.

Visualisation may take place while the subject is normally alert, or a light hypnotic trance may be induced. Hypnosis is thought to facilitate visualisation, although the research base to support this idea is relatively small.

Confidence Building

Confidence is a key attribute for all athletes and sports performers. The development of rock solid, inner faith in one's abilities and performance is an attribute of all successful sportsmen and women.

When an athlete enters a state of relaxed awareness they are said to be 'in the zone'. This is a state not unlike light trance, in which the subject is relaxed, focused and has excellent control over body movements and coordination.
